The Varadero Marathon is a very special sport event held in the Caribbean paradise with lots of sunshine and fantastic beaches in a beautiful country like Cuba. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic we can only organize the Half Marathon and the 10K race in 2022.

The first edition of the International Half Marathon in Varadero was held on April 15 2018.
Elite and popular runners run on a flat circuit with Caribbean atmosphere and the average temperature was 20C. More than 800 people of 15 different nationalities participated and beat the best Caribbean records.
In 2019 the number of participants increased up to 2000.

The event also consists a 10K race and a 3K popular race, in which the runners enjoy running together with Olympic Champions like Alberto Juantoreno, Ana Fidelia Quirot, Javier Sotomayor, Dayron Robles, Caridad Colon and other well-known Cuban athletes.
In 2023 the organization included as a novelty the Marathon, so runners can choose the distance they want to run in this paradise.

Ambassador and promoter of the Marathon

Alberto Juantorena (Cuba 1950), living legend of the athletic world championship, was the first athlete in history to win the 400m and the 800m at the Olympic Games in Montreal. This has never happened again up to today.

Alberto is the ambassador and promoter of the marathon, which is one of his most important personal and professional goal to achieve. Nowadays he is an active member of the marathon organization.

The Varadero International Marathon allows runners to run on a flat circuit. The race starts and finishes in the Central Park (8000 Taquillas) in the city of Varadero. It goes in its first kilometer along the First Avenue, leaving the famous ‘Josone Park ‘ on the right.

When the race has covered 2 kilometers, it goes to the South Highway (Arenas Blancas) towards Matanzas until 24 Street where the race turns to the South Highway again towards Bahia Blanca (First Avenue). Here the runners will enjoy the amazing views of Bahía de Cardenas.
Afterwards at Km.14 the race joins the Kawama Avenue turning back at Km.16 to Caleta Beach and First Avenue, finishing in the Central Park.

Where First Avenue and South Highway join, the race turns 180 to First Avenue. Approximately at Km 6,700 on Kawama Avenue the race turns another 180• to Novoforma. From here the race continues on First Avenue until it finishes in Central Park (8000 Taquillas)

Once the Half Marathon and the 10K race are over, children and adults of all ages can run the Popular race. After the race, as in previous editions (if COVID-19 conditions allow us) there will be a celebration party with a Cuban orchestra, drinks and food stands. Runners of different nationalities will enjoy a unique race in paradise.

What you should know when you participate in a marathon

Next we are going to answer some frequently asked questions for those who are going to run a marathon for the first time.

Yes, the level does not matter. Advanced or beginners, all can participate. Even if you are a beginner, the most important is having the best preparation and training.

If you are coming with us, the only thing you need is excitement because we take care of everything else.

No. In Varadero people of all ages can run. Youngsters, adults and seniors.
Most people run this race for fun and to enjoy a great experience.
To run the Half Marathon in Varadero you have to be over 18 years and over 16 years for the 10K race. The popular race does not have an age limit.
